The proper way to keep a pet rat
11 Jul 2010
When most people think of a rat they think of a pest with an aggressive temperament that is responsible for the growth of fierce disease. But a pet rat is a very different ball game and can be a splendidly rewarding pet to own.
Rats are clean, perceptive and affectionate. This can seem surprising but essentially they can develop the same relationship with their owner as some cats and dogs can. With the right care, and if bought from an accredited dealer, a pet rat can give your family and you many hours of happiness and fun.
Pet rats are from the same species as the wild rat but have gone through controlled breeding to be certain that they're temperamentally suited for human contact. They also are better looking and significantly less assertive than wild rats.
If you are thinking about purchasing a rat as a pet you should make sure you get it from a breeder that has exercised due care and caution in their upbringing. Rats that've been gently weaned and frequently handled since birth are far likelier to make good pets.
It is important to note that rats, like dogs and cats and other such pets, are not just a lovable present for Xmas or birthdays. They need high levels of care for several years so you have to be sure of your commitment prior to starting.
Ensure you get all of the right equipment to look after your rat and that you provide them with the best environment for their contentment. Like any sad animal, a unhappy rat may lash out or get sick. When you bring your rat home try and spend as much time as possible stroking and playing with it. Let it sit within your shirt or on your shoulder while you read a book or watch Television, and stroke and adore it as much as you can.
